FOSIS Student Hijab Committee

January 17, 2009

History

We are a student committee set up by students for students. We were initially set up in reaction to the Hijab situation in Gory. So we read the papers and kept up to date with what was going on which includes interview with the Irish Independent

· Article printed on the front page of the Irish Times weekend review

· RTE Radio1 – Spectrum

However, most of the sisters were away for the summer we didn’t take that much action after that. We subsequently monitored the media for a while – no longer such a big issue

Mission

We want a future in which we are integrated, we simply want to make the hijabi girl an ordinary, run of the mill component of Irish society.

Aims and Objectives

To promote awareness about the hijab and NOT to make it an issue

· To have a modern outlook

· We want more integration – we want to show that Hijabi girls can not only take part in Irish society

· We want to make the hijab seen in places it hasn’t been seen before.

· So we have decided to take a different route in order to achieve our aims and objectives

· No conferences

· We want to get involved with Irish community itself

UCD Islamic Society

January 17, 2009

The Islamic Society at University College Dublin (UCD) in Ireland was formed in 1991. As the number of Muslim students increased, a clear need for a society became apparent. The Society’s main aim was to improve services for the Muslim students, and to promote a proper view of the Muslims and Islam both in and outside the university. The membership of the society has been on the increase right through the 90’s. The society includes members from all faculties and campuses of the university. The members come from all over the world.
